Day – Landscape

My courses were due to run between March -June. Due to the unpredictable nature of the situation, any long-form courses not already started will be postponed until it is clear what is happening.

With luck, I'll be up and running again over the Summer and hopefully back to classroom-based courses in September.

Landscape photography is one of the first styles that new camera owners try. It is also one of the most difficult to master because the shooting conditions change constantly and cannot be guaranteed.

The idea of this 1-day course is to teach you how to evaluate the scene using both technical and compositional skills which will then allow you to get the best from any given situation.

A flexible approach to landscape photography is required to avoid falling into the trap of using a lack of ‘correct’ weather as an excuse for not getting any shots. Instead of ‘poor weather’, ‘the wrong light’, ‘too many people/not enough people’ being an excuse not to shoot, in this course you will learn how to use the unpredictability of the situation to your advantage and discern the qualities that present themselves on the day that will perhaps give you a different set of shots than you anticipated.

You often only get one opportunity to visit a given location. Having the skills to deal with whatever conditions  you find when you get there is crucial to becoming a more successful and confident photographer.

Although you may go out to shoot a wide open space, other opportunities present themselves when on location - architecture, textural shots, etc - and you will learn how to maximise the photographic opportunities of any outing.

If you are feeling that your landscape shots are missing a certain something, then this is the day for you.

We will meet at Brighton Station and head out by bus (approx. 25 minutes) to the historic village of Rottingdean. We will begin our shoot by visiting Kipling Gardens and St Margaret’s Church before walking back down through the village and down onto Rottingdean beach.

After taking some shots we will stop for lunch before strolling along the beach to Saltdean where we will take our final shots before returning to Brighton.

Buses leave every 15 minutes from Brighton Station. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes.

The cost of travel and lunch is not included.

Bring your camera, spare batteries and memory cards if you have them.

Wide angle and telephoto lenses.

A tripod is not essential but is undeniably an asset.

Good walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing.

"Before going on Bill’s beginners photography course, I was a bit hesitant. I was quickly reassured upon meeting Bill, who is incredibly down-to-earth and engaging in his teaching.

I would highly recommend any beginners heading into intermediary levels, as I’m sure you’ll learn something new, and most importantly have a fun time as well!"

James Barron

"Bill has taken my patchy, YouTube learnt Photography knowledge and taught me everything I need to know to take a great photo.
Bill is a great, patient teacher with a wealth of photography knowledge.

I cannot recommend Bill’s courses enough!"

Sue Braat

"I attended Bill’s beginners photography course this year and really enjoyed it. By the end of the course I felt confident enough to use my camera on manual settings and knew how to compose a good photo.

Bill has a wealth of knowledge and is a great teacher. I would recommend his course to anybody who would like to take their cameras off automatic settings with confidence."
